Mrs. Gladys Lee Clowers Wells was born in Hazlehurst, MS on May 1, 1948, to the late Mr. Henry Lee Clowers and Mamie Lee Jenkins Clowers. She was an only child but had many cousins who were like sisters. One who lived with her for a while, Geneva Hughes Harris, who preceded her in death.
Gladys began her education at the historical Smith Robertson Elementary & Westside Elementary and continued at Sumner Hill High where she graduated in 1966. It was at Sumner Hill where she met her husband Walter Lee Wells, and they married in February 1967. To this union, two children were born, Walter Jr., and Teresa.
She accepted Christ at an early age at Truevine Baptist Church in Jackson. After marriage, she joined church with her husband at St. Paul U.M. Church and faithfully served as church secretary, Sunday School secretary, an usher, sang in the senior and mass choir, United Methodist Women group and served on the communion and outreach committee for over 30 years. After her husband, Walter died, she moved her membership to Collis Hill COCHUSA with her daughter, Teresa, and her family. Gladys was excited to be among classmates & family at Collis Hill. She truly enjoyed smiling and speaking to everyone. She did not say a lot and that’s when family members began calling her “quiet grace.” When asked about her faith in God, Gladys expressed that she knew God had been good to her. She was a faithful member until her health began to fail but if we said, “let’s go,” she was ready. She loved church, grandkids events, going to Westside Senior Center, participating in the Westside Neighborhood Association events, and sitting among her friends at the Rose of Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Walter, her parents, and many other relatives. She leaves to cherish her memory: a loving son, Walter Jr., and a loving daughter and caregiver, Teresa (Marvin) Jackson. Her grandchildren, Kayata (Derrick) Myles, Sharlisa Wells, Ranita (Bezaleel) Israel, Tiara, Marvin Elliott, and Marcus Walter and 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in law, Robert (Betty) Wells and Rickey (Jackie) Wells and one sister-in law, Anna Margaret (Sylvester) Handy. A host of nieces, nephews, and special cousins and friends.
